Barbuda by sea (our
account of the trip)
Collecting from Dickenson
Bay, this 85 foot power cat speeds across the Atlantic crossing
to Barbuda in just an hour while you relax looking out for
turtles, dolphins and at certain times of the year the humpback
whale.
Barbuda is Antigua's sister
island and is 62 square miles of unsurpassed natural beauty
and fascinating history. As the highest point only rises a
little higher than the palm trees, you only see Barbuda from
just a few miles offshore. The Atlantic crossing can be rough
and is usually a good idea to take motion sickness pills according
to their instructions well before you get to the boat in the
morning. Also a good tip from us is to look at the horizon
and stay upwind of the engines. This way you will be fine:-)
As soon as you see Barbuda
you understand why Lady Diana chose this as her favourite
getaway. The beaches are second to none with miles and miles
of azure water caressing brilliant
white and pink sands. Rarely
will you see footprints as you cruise along the beach, but
you will frequently see turtle tracks. The endangered Hawksbill
turtle lays here between May and November. Finally on this
never ending beach you get Luis Beach which separates the
sea from the Lagoon. It is here that the local guides collect
you with their small boats for the best part of this tour.
Barbuda's giant Lagoon is home to the largest Frigate Bird
colony in the Caribbean and the extremely knowledgeable guides
will tell you all about these magnificent birds while you
cruise up into their habitat. Roddy and I both found this
very interesting.
After the guides bring you
back to the beach its time for the lunch buffet style. The
boat is so big that even with a full boat of 75 guests there
is always lots of room. With lunch out of the way you cruise
back along the beach and towards the Exclusive hotels of K-Club
and Coco Point. You will understand why the rich and famous
have visited here.
Stopping between these two
fabulous resorts for snorkeling we saw rays, turtles, a barracuda
and more with lots of other fish in between. The shallow coral
reef was pretty good too. I always feel sad leaving Barbuda
and always make plans for my return on the trip back to Antigua.
I'm sure you will do the same. This tour is US $120 including
all drinks, lunch and snorkeling gear. Transport to and from
hotel not included.
