Though Antigua is an independent parlimentary democracy, it is still part of the British Commonwealth. The Prime Minister is our elected leader, though technically the queen is head of state. Her emissary on the island is the Governor General. who at present is Dr James Carlisle. The old colonial ties mean less with each passing year however and our government is gradually updating colonial laws and procedures to bring Antigua more in line with other West Indian Islands and the rest of the world. The Antigua Labour Party (ALP) was one of the first parties formed on the island and recenly after 28 years lost a general election. The new guys and girls in Power are The UPP. They have made great promices and it looks like things are looking very positive for Antigua's future. We wish them luck.
